An ability to work under minimal, broad supervision and manage new situations and special assignments which call for initiative, planning, judgment, and interpretation.


 



  • Conducts research to determine composition, properties, behavior, utilization, development, treatments, and processing methods of wood and wood products with interaction with the team, clients, outside resources, and universities.

  • Analyzes physical, chemical, and biological properties of wood.

  • Lead projects in wood treating and developing attributes of lumber to meet new and novel applications.

  • Develops and improves methods of preservation and treating wood with substances to increase performance properties including resistance to mold, fire, fungi, insects, and marine borers as well as the mechanical properties of the wood.

  • Responsibilities to support the design and productivity of the production operations including QC methods and implementation, data management and overall approval of production processes.

  • Conducts tests to determine ability of wood modification including stains, paints, and adhesives to withstand water, oil penetration, temperature extremes, and stability, strength, hardness, and crystallinity of wood under variety of conditions.

  • Evaluates and improves effectiveness of key inputs and industrial equipment and production processes.

  • Determines best type of wood for specific application and investigates methods of turning waste wood materials into useful products.

  • Managing testing strategies and projects including certifications and labels from leading globally recognized institutions.

  • Position requires residency in greater metropolitan Augusta, Georgia.

Qualifications
• Master’s degree in Wood Science, Forestry, Materials Science and Engineering or related degree plus 3-5 years of relevant laboratory / field experience required; or, PhD in same fields.
• Experience working with the biological and chemical structure of wood and/or treating of wood for use as a building material.
• Materials chemistry knowledge and practical R&D and science-based new product development process experience are helpful backgrounds.
• Wood products industry knowledge including forestry, sawmill, and/or wood treating, and preservative experience welcomed but not mandatory.
• Ability to collect data and statistically coordinate conclusions leading to the development of new products.
• Strong organizational, communication and analytical skills
• Project management experience running product development projects is helpful.
• Ability to influence and lead internal teams or coordination with external partners and vendors.
• Experience with publishing research papers or patents is a plus.
• Familiarity with building materials, regulations and building codes also a plus.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and current data software and emerging applications
